“We are built for contemplation.” (Martin Laird, ‘Into the Silent Land’)
Join us as we explore together, in study and conversation, a selection of key figures and works in the long spiritual tradition of Christian Contemplative Spirituality. This year, our theme will be ‘Love and the Christian Contemplative Spiritual Life’, and we will spend time with Augustine, Julian of Norwich, Ignatius, John of the Cross, Evelyn Underhill and Etty Hillesum. Together with these six figures from through history, our opening and closing sessions make this a course of eight weeks.
The hope is that across these weeks we’re able to develop our understanding of Christian contemplative spirituality, whatever our starting point.
Each session will begin with a short time of shared silence, and then the rest of our time will be spent considering the session’s particular focus, through resources, individual reflection and shared conversation. We will use chapters from the book ‘Journey to the Heart: Christian Contemplation through the Centuries’ edited by Kim Nataraja (Canterbury Press), and ask that you buy your own copy of this book before the start of the course; there will be a selected chapter to read ahead of each session.
This course is offered online. We have run similar courses very successfully online in 2020 and 2021, and know that it works well - as well as making it possible to join wherever you are.
