City dwelling is about finding our way in a place full of people, full of buildings, full of activity and challenge. We can keep our heads down, our phones on, our pace speedy, our doors closed. Or we can choose a different response to the city, even if only sometimes: a slower pace, fresh perspectives, new connections. Now and again, we can take our time in the city.

‘Reflective Chester’ is about ways to do this, individually and collectively. We offer ways for people to notice the positive in the ordinary things that surround us all in the city every day. Paying attention to the present moment is an ancient practice recognised across cultures for the benefits it brings. Reflective Chester pays attention to the ‘now’ of the city itself, our common ground. This is good for us individually, but in addition we want people across the city to hear the reflections of one another, for the good of us all.

We want to discover what’s good for the soul in Chester, according to the people who share this city.

How it works

Reflective Chester works in a variety of ways, mainly group sessions, a pop-up stall, and social media interaction. It’s important to us that this is a project for all, so we especially welcome ways we can make Reflective Chester work with groups with specific social needs, collaborating with local groups and charities to make this happen. If your group, charity or event would like to explore how Reflective Chester can work for you, please contact us for information.

A year of reflective living in the city

From time to time we update this page with words and images drawn from what people have been telling us through Reflective Chester. Take some time with what’s here, and then notice your own slower pace and fresh perspective on what’s good for the soul on the common ground of our city.

May - words and images from Reflective Chester activities, and very loosely connected through a theme for May of the earthiness of the city… Each image will move on after about ten seconds, and the full reflection takes about four and a half minutes.
