Life before Death: the Psychology of Flourishing
February has seen the start of our regular programme, and we were very pleased for our first Soulful Saturday to welcome Roger Dawson SJ as he led a day with the intriguing title of Life before Death: the Psychology of Flourishing.
As an experienced clinical psychologist and now Director of St Beuno's, a residential retreat house in North Wales known for its silence and spirituality, he was well-placed to offer us a day on what psychology studies say about human flourishing, and the resonance this has with what Christian spirituality can say about living life to the full.
With clarity, humour and in a variety of ways, he guided us in exploration of what might contribute to wellbeing, as well as offering practical ways of developing that wellbeing. One focus of the day was a consideration of being so immersed in something we are thoroughly engaged with it - and how this is a characteristic in both psychological wellbeing and spiritual experience; by the end of the day we certainly felt we had been engaged with something worthwhile, for ourselves and - importantly - for others. Already with requests for more from Roger, we look forward to him visiting us again.
One of the best things about these events is that they can bring together people from a diverse range of places and experiences. It was great to welcome so many people from so many different places on this day and the positive feedback is an encouraging start to these Soulful Saturdays. With a very varied programme of Saturdays throughout the year, we hope it includes something you'd like to try.
