Exploring Christian Contemplative Spirituality: Discovering Mysticism

NOW FULLY BOOKED - THANK YOU

“We are built for contemplation.” (Martin Laird, ‘Into the Silent Land’)

Join us as we explore together a selection of key figures and works in the long spiritual tradition of Christian Contemplative Spirituality: St John & St Paul in Scripture, and then from the late Middle Ages ‘Mystics’ Hildegard of Bingen and Meister Eckhart, and the work ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’. The hope is that these figures and works will help us to develop our understanding of Christian Mysticism, whatever our starting point. The fifth session will be a reflective review of the course.

Each session will begin with a short time of shared silence, and then the rest of our time will be spent considering the session’s particular focus, through resources, individual reflection and shared conversation. We will use chapters from the book ‘Journey to the Heart: Christian Contemplation through the Centuries’ edited by Kim Nataraja (Canterbury Press), and ask that you buy your own copy of this book and read the first two chapters before the start of the course; there will then be a selected chapter to read ahead of each session.

This course is offered online. We expect it to be popular and so anticipate that our space in Abbey Square may be too small, especially in the light of any Covid circumstances. We ran a similar course very successfully online in 2020, and know that it works well. We are saving a sixth date for a possible additional optional in-person event for course participants if it’s appropriate at the time.

Thursdays 4, 11, 18, 25 November & 2 December - with a possible optional event on 9 December

10.15am - 12.15

on Zoom

£50 total for the five online sessions (and in addition please provide yourself with a copy of the book)

To book: please go to our Ticketsource online bookings by clicking here. We will then send you the link for the Zoom sessions closer to the event date.
